So last month my sons 944 was totaled. Pics below. The car was in very good mechanical condition, it needed a paint job and some hail dents taken out, the dash had 0 cracks, drivers seat has some wear but no cracks, switches/motors all worked, engine was unharmed and just recently had timing belt replaced, transmission may be salvageable, rear and side glass is intact(front has a crack in it). The other guys insurance has offered me the car for $900. Should I buy it and part it out or just let them keep it. I'm on the fence with this as, I can see stripping it down I could net more than $900, but on the other hand I do not want to store parts for years and years. What do you guys think?

Short answer: if you see yourself buying another 944 ever, hang onto it. There are enough basket-cases out there with straight bodies and ruined interiors/other issues you're excellently suited for a two-int0-one.
If not, you might be able to re-sell it for the $900 even as-is and not parted out, but $900 cash in hand is $900 cash in hand.

I'd say just let insurance take it. After you add in your effort it won't be worth it.

Ive had friends do this and 1 of them ended up getting rid of everything pretty quick by utilizing every outlet possible .. granted this was also for a 2005 yamaha R6 .. the second buddy has shit everywhere and pays for a storage locker cause no one wants his stuff... I think you take the insurance money and but something else for you and your son to clean up and make his daily (:

That is what I was thinking. Originally we were going to buy another one and have some spare parts off this one, but I'm not sure he wants another one right now. I don't see myself getting another 944 in the 'near' future. I gave him this 944 when he turned 17, so the his/mine is used interchangeably even though the title now clearly has his name on it.

I was going to say that it isn't ruined, just turned into a kammback 24 Hours of Lemons racer...but...the slushbox kills any chance for total dominance. Also - how did the rear glass not shatter? Incredible.
Anyway, do the "is it worth it calc"
Add up the total profit you'd get from stripping it. $1000? $1500 Tops.
Now hours.
Stripping = 10 hrs
Emailing, waiting for, meeting, bargaining with buyers, flakes & phonies on craigslist = 100 hrs.
$1500/110 = $13.60/hr. Still think it is worth it?

flakes & phonies on craigslist
That comment right there will make me pass on stripping it.

Yup, that would be the only reason to keep/strip it. Buy a nice body with a blown motor and swap it in.
I know a lot of early 911 guys who want the seats out of these (I sold two sets to a guy who reupholsters them for $500).
Otherwise, not worth the work if you don't plan on getting another one.
